A good starting point for understanding women painters. Fun documentary (in French) that gives a good overview of some important women painters (mainly Italian and French artists). It begins in the Italian Renaissance with Sofonisba Anguissola, moves into the Baroque with Artemisia Gentileschi, and on into the 18th century with Rosalba Carriera, Angelika Kauffmann, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard. 19th century artists are also discussed, such as Rosa Bonheur and Berthe Morisot. Only a surface introduction to women painters in Europe before 1900 This French documentary just barely scratches the surface of great women artists before the 1900s. It concentrates on French artists, but an Italian gets in here. Oddly enough, no Mary Cassat — about the only female painter I know of. (And I know very little about art — so if I know the name, she MUST be considered famous.) The French critics say all the usual things we expect about what a shame it is that we do not know more about women painters in history but they also give interpretations…
